Transitioning military members and veterans can expect to encounter some background investigations and security requirements even if they pursue careers outside the sphere of government agencies and federal contractors.

Hiring processes in the financial services and healthcare sectors regularly require applicants to meet certain standards regarding personal financial management, drug and alcohol use, criminal activity and other behaviors that might be regarded as risks. Transportation, construction, manufacturing and retail companies may require applicants to pass drug screenings and meet certain medical standards. Many employers in the professional services sector and elsewhere research applicants’ social media postings to identify behaviors that might make the individual an undesirable employee. Consequently, transitioning military and veterans need to be ready to address a certain amount of background scrutiny even if they expect to work solely in the private and/or non-profit sectors.
